Inland public safety agencies made good on their promises to cite people who illegally light fireworks, and some of the revelers left Fourth of July celebrations in handcuffs.
The San Bernardino Police Department, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and Chino Valley Fire District recently reported statistics for holiday citations and seizures.
The so-called safe and sane fireworks are legal in the city of San Bernardino south of the 210 Freeway. Police said they took a proactive approach, and officers wrote 28 citations and seized 17,695 pounds of illegal fireworks, said Sgt. Christopher Gray, a department spokesman.
There were 34 arrests — the majority being felonies, Gray said — for crimes such as being in possession of illegal firearms and warrants. Fifteen firearms were seized.
The Sheriff’s Department said it wrote 134 citations, made seven arrests and nabbed more than 1,500 pounds of fireworks.
The Chino Valley Fire District responded to 13 fires started by fireworks, said Massiel Ladron De Guevara, a department spokeswoman. Those included a 1-acre brush fire. One man was hospitalized for treatment of a hand injury, she said.
Officials wrote 59 citations in the city and nearby county areas and seized 310 pounds of illegal fireworks, she said.
