The San Bernardino Black Culture Foundation is seeking nominations for its annual Black Rose awards, to be presented Feb. 1 at Cal State San Bernardino.
“If you know of a remarkable Black leader or someone deeply committed to improving the community for everyone in the Inland Empire, the Black Culture Foundation is eager to learn about them. We are actively seeking nominations for the Black Rose, Humanitarian of the Year and Community Service awards,” Carl Dameron, president of the San Bernardino Black Culture Foundation, said in a news release.
“We are searching for individuals whose volunteer efforts surpass their job-related activities,” Jim King, Black Rose founder, said in the news release. “These are the unsung heroes, individuals who volunteer with multiple organizations or dedicate their spare time to one or more. They do not seek recognition but endeavor to improve their community and make it a better place to live.”
To make a nomination, go to sbbcfoundation.org. Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 30.
The awards program is dedicated to honoring the Black community in the Inland Empire, but the awards are not limited to people who are Black, according to Dameron. Over its three decades, the program has honored many community leaders in law enforcement, education and other arenas for their contributions to the Inland Empire.
The Black Rose awards, presented during Black History Month, are sponsored by the San Bernardino Black Culture Foundation, a nonprofit established in 1968 by a group of people who felt that school systems have failed to include Black history studies in regular curriculums nationwide, according to the news release.
The San Bernardino Black Culture Foundation’s purpose is to kindle an interest in and deeper appreciation of Black culture, raise community awareness about the achievements of Black people, past and present, and organize an annual Black History Month parade and associated cultural events.
