A suspected drunk driver was arrested after hitting a car on the right shoulder of the 91 Freeway in Riverside, leaving one dead and four injured on Wednesday night, Dec. 18.
The driver, a 35-year-old Santa Ana woman, was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI, said Officer Javier Navarro, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.
There was an earlier crash involving a 2023 Toyota Camry and a 2012 Toyota Camry on the westbound 91, west of Madison Street, which was reported to the CHP around 9:40 p.m.
Both cars stopped on the right shoulder and four of the five occupants stood outside, he said.
The suspect was in a Honda Accord when it veered onto the shoulder and hit the 2023 Camry and a man who was getting something from the trunk, Navarro said.
The coroner’s office had not yet publicly identified him.
The Camry was pushed forward into the other Camry. The other three people standing outside and a woman sitting in the 2023 Toyota were hospitalized. Their injuries ranged from moderate to major, Navarro said.
