In Redlands, the University of Redlands is hosting a week of events to honor King. They include a luminaria ceremony planned on campus Tuesday, Jan. 21, and a virtual-reality experience exploring King’s “I Have a Dream” speech the same day. An MLK Peace Walk is scheduled to start at the university Thursday, Jan. 23.

Highland recognized the holiday Monday with the 45th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, hosted by Inland Empire African American Churches.

Also in Riverside, Riverside City College will host a brunch in honor of King on Tuesday, Jan. 21. And Temecula is marking the occasion with a week-long donation drive, starting Monday, Jan. 20, to collect non-perishable food and essential items at the Welcome Center.

Meanwhile, the Riverside Walk-A-Thon marked three decades of pushing for unity, justice and reflection. The event, organized by the Riverside African American Historical Society, began at the Stratton Community Center in Bordwell Park on the city’s Eastside and ended at the downtown Riverside Public Library.

Guests made a stop at the King statue on Main Street in downtown as a way to honor “Dr. King’s dream of justice and equality,” a city of Riverside Instagram post states.

The events celebrated the federal holiday acknowledging the life and work of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., a prominent leader in the American civil rights movement.
