Riverside schools trustee Angelo Farooq announced Thursday, July 11, that he will retire from the board when his term ends in December.
Farooq, who represents Trustee Area 3, was the Riverside Unified School District’s first Asian American board member. By the end of his tenure, he will have served two terms for a total of nine years.
“It has been incredibly meaningful to help empower our youth and contribute towards their promising futures alongside extraordinary employees, our Superintendent and colleagues on the board,” Farooq said in a district news release. “Public schools are the foundation of every community and I am looking forward to supporting the continued excellence of the district in my ongoing capacities as a proud Father and Riversider.”

Farooq ran in the March 5 primary seeking the 31st state Senate District seat in Riverside County, which covers Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Moreno Valley, Perris, San Jacinto and parts of Corona, Fontana, Menifee and Riverside. He did not advance to the November ballot.
The Riverside school board earlier this week decided to appoint a replacement for Tom Hunt, who died in June. The appointee will serve the rest of Hunt’s term, which ends in December. Hunt represented Trustee Area 4.
Trustee Areas 2, 3 and 4, will be on the Nov. 5 ballot. Former North High School and board President Principal Dale Kinnear represents Trustee Area 2.
