Riverside planners consider a Dutch Bros coffee shop on Van Buren Boulevard

Riverside’s Planning Commission is scheduled to hear a proposal to allow a Dutch Bros coffee shop near Walmart on Van Buren Boulevard on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The meeting is at 9 a.m. in City Hall, 3900 Main St., according to its agenda.

The commission will consider whether the 0.75-acre project site should be rezoned from single-family residential to commercial retail and do a design review of project plans.

Dutch Bros is a popular coffee chain that primarily provides service through drive-thrus. This project calls for a 950-square foot building, which is smaller than most fast food restaurants. By contrast, a drive-thru-only Chick-fil-A that opened in Riverside’s Ramona neighborhood in February has a 2,930-square-foot building.

The commission meeting will be a live webcast of the meeting at www.RiversideCA.gov/Meeting, according to the city’s calendar.

The planning commission approved another Dutch Bros coffee shop on Magnolia Avenue on Aug. 15.

Dutch Bros has been rapidly growing in Southern California, but the closest open shops to Riverside are in Rialto and Eastvale, according to the the chain’s website. A shop is under construction in Moreno Valley.
