An arrest has been made after a Fontana Police vehicle was rammed during an investigation in Riverside and a suspect crashed shortly thereafter, killing a passenger on Thursday, Oct. 24.
At about 2:30 p.m. Riverside Police responded to a traffic collision at Riverwalk Parkway and Collett Avenue in the La Sierra neighborhood, where they discovered a suspect had rammed a white Nissan Maxima into a Fontana Police Department vehicle.
Fontana Police were in pursuit of the suspect when he rammed his car into their vehicle in an attempt to flee the scene, Riverside Police said in a statement on Monday, Oct. 28.
As they searched for the suspect, they came upon a multi-vehicle collision nearby that the white Nissan was involved in. The suspect, a 62-year-old male identified as Ezekial Avendano Lopez, was injured and transported to a local hospital, where he was medically cleared and subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer.
An unidentified 49-year-old female passenger in the suspect’s vehicle was also transported from the scene to a local hospital where she died of her injuries.
Three others involved in the collision suffered minor injuries.
Avendano Lopez was being held on $1 million bail and additional charges related to the deadly traffic collision were pending, the police statement said.
Detectives are looking for witnesses who saw the suspect driving the white Nissan Maxima before the crash at Riverwalk Parkway and Collett Avenue and ask anyone with additional information to contact Traffic Detective Jeff Derouin at 951-826-8722.
