A Corona Boy Scout is sprucing up the office of a group that supports the blind community.

Jared Hernandez, a 16-year-old member of Troop 523 in Corona, is painting the meeting room at Blindness Support Services, Inc. in Riverside. The work is part of his Eagle Scout Project.

It is the first Eagle Scout Project to benefit the organization, Jared’s mother Nancy Jiménez Hernandez said in an email.

He held a pancake fundraiser earlier in October to raise awareness of and money for the project.

“I would hope that my Eagle Project sets in motion more scouting projects that would help a part of our community that has been historically underserved,” Jared said in an email.

The senior at Santiago High School in Corona plays ukulele, belongs to Santiago’s Performance Choir, its Madrigals and is a member of the Bands & Orchestras of Santiago Sharks.

Jared also serves on the Riverside County Youth Advisory Council for District 2.
