9/11 anniversary observed at Riverside event

It was a day of solemn remembrance.

From Riverside to Rancho Cucamonga, residents on Wednesday, Sept. 11, marked the 23rd anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

There were speeches, music, and in Riverside’s city council chambers, a stair-climbing tribute to the many firefighters who worked to rescue victims in the World Trade Center that day in New York City.

Riverside’s Day of Remembrance Ceremony also included remarks from Riverside City Councilmember Jim Perry, Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson, Police Chief Larry Gonzalez and Fire Chief Michael Moore as well as a moment of silence.

Finally, using stair-climbing fitness machines, more than three dozen Riverside employees “climbed” about 2,200 steps – roughly 110 floors — in a salute to firefighters who climbed the 110 floors of the World Trade Center.

Other Inland Empire events included a ceremony at Central Park’s Freedom Courtyard in Rancho Cucamonga that featured the city’s fire and police departments’ honor guard and a pipes and drum performance. Commemorations were held at fire stations in Norco and Eastvale. And the Ontario Police Department observed a moment of silence.
