Man was armed with pellet gun in Murrieta parking lot when officer shot him, authorities say

A motorist who was shot and injured by an off-duty police officer during an apparent road-rage incident in Murrieta was armed with a pellet gun, authorities said on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Around 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, the man had gotten involved in a confrontation with another motorist in a parking lot along the 39500 block of Murrieta Hot Springs Road, near Margarita Road, Murrieta police said.

An off-duty Hemet police officer tried to intervene, ending with the man being shot multiple times.

The man had a pellet gun when shot by the officer, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

What exactly led to the gunfire was not released by authorities.

The man, who had not been identified, was taken to a hospital, where he remained on Wednesday.
