Man goes for ambulance ride in Moreno Valley — but as a thief, not a patient, authorities say

When a man was seen acting erratically in Moreno Valley on Monday afternoon, Nov. 25, paramedics were called to treat him and an ambulance was summoned to take him to a hospital.

But the man had other ideas about the ambulance ride.

He pulled the driver from the ambulance, climbed behind the wheel and drove off from the area of Sunnymead Boulevard and Indian Street just after 4 p.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

“Luckily, the suspect didn’t make it very far before crashing into a fire hydrant, a retaining wall, and a palm tree,” a post on the agency’s Facebook page says. “The suspect was arrested and transported (not by ambulance) to the jail.”

There were no injuries reported to the paramedics, sheriff’s Lt. Deirdre Vickers said.

A spokeswoman for American Medical Response said that was one of the company’s ambulances.

“We appreciate the quick actions of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and thank them for their support,” she said.
