5 died near Moreno Valley after illegal passing caused chain-reaction crash, CHP says

The multi-car crash that killed five people southeast of Moreno Valley on Monday, Sept. 9, was triggered when one of the drivers attempted to illegally pass another car on the shoulder, the California Highway Patrol said.

The dead had not been publicly identified as of Wednesday. Among them were the driver that the CHP believes caused the collision, said Jonathan Torres, a spokesman in the CHP’s San Gorgonio Office.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death toll Wednesday. The Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department, after cutting badly burned victims out of the wreckages, initially said six had perished.

The crash happened at 2:18 p.m. on Gilman Springs Road at Bridge Street. A Honda Insight was traveling west on the two-lane Gilman Springs Road when it passed on the right. The Insight veered back to the left, striking another westbound car and resulting in a collision with two eastbound cars.

Three of the four cars caught fire, Torres said.

Two other people were injured, Cal Fire said.

Firefighters put out a 4-acre brush fire that resulted.

The CHP is investigating whether the occupants were wearing seat belts.
