2024 Election Results: 2 incumbents, 1 newcomer lead in Moreno Valley City Council races

Moreno Valley voters mostly stuck with who they knew when selecting their mayor and two city council members on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Mayor Ulises Cabrera appears to have been reelected, with 47.04% of the vote, results released at 5:07 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, with all precincts reporting, show. He’s trailed by Hector Diaz with 23.16% of the vote, Daryl Terrell with 18.63% and Patsy D. Brown with 11.18%.

For the District 1 City Council seat, results show sitting Councilmember Elena Baca-Santa Cruz ahead of Alisa Lopez with 50.88% of the vote to 49.12%.

In the race for the the vacant District 3 seat, Erlan Gonzalez leads with 34.49% of the vote, followed by Alvin DeJohnette with 24.55% of the vote, Zenda Yvette Lewis with 16.68%, Justin Jackson with 15.39% and Anna Lapuos with 8.89%.

“It’s no surprise that the voters chose to support experience and continuity in leadership across the board,” Baca-Santa Cruz wrote in an email Thursday evening, Nov. 7. “With the reelection of the mayor, myself, and the election of a planning commissioner to the vacant seat, it’s clear that our community values a team that understands Moreno Valley’s priorities and has a proven track record of getting things done. I’m looking forward to continuing to work alongside our elected officials to bring positive progress to all of Moreno Valley.”

District 3 City Councilmember David Márquez resigned in April after the city and state attorney general said he’d effectively vacated his seat. In October 2022, the city filed paperwork with the state, alleging Márquez missed too many consecutive days of council meetings. In May 2023, Attorney General Rob Bonta granted permission for the lawsuit, becoming a co-plaintiff against Márquez.

Under state law, if “a city councilmember is absent without permission from all regular city council meetings for 70 days consecutively from the last regular meeting he or she attended, his or her office becomes vacant and shall be filled as any other vacancy.” The complaint alleged Márquez missed council meetings between July 5 and Sept. 6, 2022.

The Riverside County Registrar of Voters expects to post its next updated vote count at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8.
