Man fatally stabbed in Lake Elsinore parking lot; suspect arrested

A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing another man in a Lake Elsinore parking lot, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

Around 9:32 p.m. Saturday, July 20, deputies responded to a report of an “assault with a deadly weapon” in a business parking lot on the 31000 block of Riverside Drive, where a man was found suffering from multiple stab wounds. The man died at the scene, authorities said.

The Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the victim as 41-year-old Fabian Rodriguez of Lake Elsinore.

The suspect, Steven Smith, 50, of Lake Elsinore, fled the parking lot and, aided by a drone they launched, deputies located him less than half a mile away running into an apartment complex in the 16000 block of Joy Street. Smith was detained and later booked on suspicion of murder, possession of unlawful paraphernalia, and trespassing, jail records show.

Details about the weapon used, the relationship between Smith and Rodriguez, and the circumstances leading up to the stabbing were not released.
