A person was shot in San Jacinto on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 24, and later the San Jacinto Unified School District announced that San Jacinto High’s home football game scheduled for that night would not be played.
The shooting happened about 3:50 p.m. in the area of Tahquitz Street and Ramona Boulevard, said Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
“When deputies arrived, they located an injured male on the ground. The victim was alert and was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. Deputies are currently investigating. No arrests have been made at this time,” Brito-Gonzalez said.
The sergeant could not provide any description of the shooter or the suspect’s car.
The shooting happened about half a mile from San Jacinto High.
District officials, in announcing the postponement of the game, did not connect that decision with the shooting.
Brito-Gonzalez said she could not confirm social media reports that the victim was a student at San Jacinto High.
San Jacinto High Athletic Director Amanda Galliano declined to comment to a reporter who went to the school or provide a phone number for the district’s public information officer so she could be immediately reached for additional details.
San Jacinto, 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain Pass League, was scheduled to host West Valley High of Hemet, which is 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play at 7:30 p.m. The winner would have clinched at least a share of the league championship.
