2 men critically injured in Hemet in shooting by bicyclist that was caught on camera

Two men were in critical condition on Friday, Aug. 16, two days after they were shot by a man on a bicycle in an attack in Hemet that was captured on surveillance cameras, the Hemet Police Department said.

The shootings happened in broad daylight on Florida Avenue, one of the city’s busiest streets.

No arrests have been announced.

The surveillance images show a man in a white shirt and blue jeans walking on the sidewalk on Florida, gesturing and yelling at a man in a light gray hooded sweatshirt on a bicycle across the street.

The pedestrian is joined by a man wearing a gray shirt and black tracksuit pants and continues to shout and gesture. The bicyclist pedals in the street beside the two men and with his right hand, reaches into a pocket.

At about 3:20 p.m., in the 900 block of Florida, the man in the white shirt breaks into a trot toward the street, and at that moment, the bicyclist points something at the pedestrian and two gunshots are heard. The pedestrian crumples to the pavement.

The other pedestrian races out into the street, chasing the bicyclist, who rides in a circle. Four more shots are heard before the second pedestrian begins exchanging punches with the bicyclist. He pulls the bicyclist’s sweatshirt off, and both men scatter. That second pedestrian was also shot.

Police ask anyone with information on the shooting to call 951-765-2423 or provide anonymous information through the Hemet Police Department’s smartphone app.
