Hemet police shoot and kill man who allegedly had gun

Hemet police fatally shot a man early Thursday morning, July 4, department officials said in a press release.

Officers responded to a bar in Hemet’s downtown district around 1:40 a.m., according to Hemet police. The reporting party told dispatch that an intoxicated man walked out of the bar with a gun in his pants, according to the department’s press release.

“Officers arrived in the area and located the male subject in the 200 block of East Florida Avenue where an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was subsequently pronounced deceased on the scene,” the release said.

The man’s name was not released pending next-of-kin notification, authorities said. The department also did not release the names of the officers involved in the shooting.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Force Investigation Detail, along with the county District Attorney’s Office and the California Department of Justice, are investigating, authorities said.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call Riverside County Sheriff’s Investigator Dan Moody at 951-955-2777 or Investigator Daniel Cortez at 951-765-2433.
