Free haircuts at Spa Pechanga lead to wigs for cancer patients

Hair shorn the past few Monday afternoons at Spa Pechanga didn’t stay on the cutting-room floor.

It was used for a noble cause — creating wigs for cancer patients.

For the 10th year, Pechanga is offering free haircuts and hairstyling for those willing to give at least 8 inches of their locks to a group that makes the wigs. Once again, the so-called Mane Campaign is part of the Pechanga Resort Casino’s efforts to raise cancer awareness during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“The campaign has touched each and every one of us,” Spa Pechanga Director Vicky Naputi said in a news release. “We’ve seen so much love, tears and strength from the donors and from breast cancer patients through our programs and because of that, we want to make this year’s campaign is even better.”

Each Monday this month, cosmetology students from Paul Mitchell The School Temecula — with help from an instructor — have offered the haircuts. The last ones are set for Monday, Oct. 28.

Hair is given to the Hair We Share organization, which fashions the free wigs for those who’ve lost their own hair in fights against cancer.

Donors receive a voucher to have their hair further cut and styled for free at the Smith Hair Salon in Temecula, the release states.

Men, women and children are asked to donate 8 or more inches of naturally colored — not harsh chemically colored or bleached — hair, according to the release. Gray hair is acceptable, too.

The casino near Temecula also sends a $50 donation to Hair We Share on behalf of donors, who are entered into a drawing to win a two-night stay at Pechanga.

Haircut donation appointments are from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. To make one, call 951-770-8501 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
