Reported Corona car burglar’s flying escape act lands him in jail

A man who police said was fleeing after attempting to break into cars outside a Walmart in Corona was arrested on Thursday despite diving through a window into a passing car, the Corona Police Department said.

Officers were sent to 479 N. McKinley Avenue on Thursday afternoon after someone reported a car burglar who was brandishing a knife, Sgt. Robert Montanez said. The officers found a man matching the description behind the store.

The man, a 26-year-old Corona resident, was uncooperative and ran from officers, Montanez said.

“While attempting to evade arrest, he dove into the open passenger window of a moving vehicle,” Montanez wrote in an email Friday. “The driver fled the vehicle with the keys and the suspect also exited and continued to run. A Corona police officer deployed his Taser, which was successful, and the suspect was arrested without further incident.”

The man was booked on suspicion of carjacking and brandishing a weapon. He remained jailed in lieu of $60,000 bail Friday, Riverside County jail records show.
