Six veterans receive quilts of valor at Riverside event

Six veterans received quilts of valor to thank them for their service during an event at the Riverside Municipal Airport.

The men were honored as part of the annual Cars, Coffee and Warbirds event Saturday, Sept. 14, by the Commemorative Air Force, Inland Empire Wing.

The honorees, a news release states, are:

Don Brower — The World War II U.S. Air Force pilot, who is 100 years old, was in the audience when organizers decided to honor him with a quilt.
James Cassaro — He served stateside in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1954 during the Cold War.
Ron Rutz — He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.
Henry Vaca — He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1970 in Vietnam.
Mike Vitatoe — He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968.
Charles “Woody” Woodard — He served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1981, during the Vietnam War.

The quilts were crafted by the Stars and Scrappers Quilts of Valor group.

“The valor blankets are a great way to recognize our veterans for their service and the sacrifice they made so we can continue to live in a free country,” Riverside City Councilmember Jim Perry said in the release.
