The California Department of Motor Vehicles is closing a San Bernardino office that handles administrative hearings and driving re-examinations.
The so-called Drivers Safety Office on Business Center Drive will close permanently Friday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m., a news release states. The city’s regular DMV, at 1310 N. Waterman Ave., remains open.
At such a DMV specialty office, drivers can seek administrative hearings regarding actions to suspend or restrict driving privileges for negligence, incidents involving alcohol or illness. Customers doing driving re-examinations because of health or safety issues also use these offices, the release states.
The office is closing because these services, such as requesting or conducting a hearing and checking a case’s status, will now be done online rather than in person.
Customers and their attorneys can receive notices, schedule hearings, upload documents, and get answers to questions about their cases online, the release states.
“The DMV no longer finds it cost-effective to have Driver Safety Offices spread across 17 different locations,” said spokesperson Ronald Ongtoaboc, who added that the agency recently launched an online case management system that offers the same services as a physical location.

Customers can visit other Driver Safety Offices in Commerce, at 5801 E. Slausen Ave., Suite 250; and in Covina, 1365 N. Grand Ave., Suite 101.
Services such as driver’s license applications/renewals and vehicle registration offered at regular DMV offices are not provided at Driver Safety Offices.
Employees at the soon-to-be closed San Bernardino location will be reassigned to nearby DMV locations, the release states.
