Riverside has received a federal allocation totaling $2.5 million for cleanup and conversion of a former U.S. National Guard armory to an arts and recreation facility, officials announced.
The Community Project Funding is earmarked for the “Put the River Back in Riverside” campaign spearheaded by Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson.
She said the money will enable the city to convert the 12,000-square-foot armory into a “multi-use arts and recreation building,” as well as pay for environmental rehabilitation, building stabilization and other requirements at the site, located on a 4.67-acre section of Fairmount Park, part of which is adjacent to the 60 Freeway.
Built in 1959, the armory has 32,000 square feet of parking, a city news release states. It has been used as a cold-weather shelter.
“As a major entry point for our city, Fairmount Park provides an opportunity for our residents and visitors to explore the river and all its natural beauty,” the mayor said.
Lock Dawson has discussed expanding and connecting recreational opportunities along the Santa Ana River in hopes of raising the profile of the namesake of the Inland Empire’s largest city.

Rep. Mark Takano, D-Riverside, worked to secure the Community Project Funding grant, saying it will serve to bring “life back into the armory building.”
A renovated armory will improve access to cultural and park activities for low- and moderate-income residents who live near the park, the release states.
“Fairmount Park is an incredible resource for Riversiders, and breathing life back into the armory building would only add to that,” Takano said. “I’m proud to have been able to assist the City in obtaining funds for this very worthy effort.”
