The 95th birthday of longtime Riverside activist Jane Block will be celebrated later this month at an event hosted by the Riverside Area Rape Crisis Center.
In November, the center honored Block as “a pioneer and activist for women’s rights” with its first Trailblazer Award. Future such awards will be named for Block, a news release states.
Block’s community work started after she came to Riverside in 1968.
In 1973, she was on the committee that led to the founding of UC Riverside’s Women’s Resource Center and was a board member. Block also was chair of the Riverside County Commission on Status of Women and founded the Riverside County Child Care Consortium in 1987. The rape crisis center was first housed at the UCR center but by 1978, became its own organization, the release states.
Block’s birthday party is set for Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the center’s office, 1845 Chicago Ave., Suite A, Riverside. Guests may stop by during those hours for refreshments and cake.
